Be Fierce!

I love our staff.  We work hard and play hard.

We're heading into a busy weekend of ministry full of ski trips, cafe renovations, KidStuf, and wrapping up our What If vision series.

I just sent them this encouragement. 
Maybe it will speak to you too.

Allow me to give you 2 words of confidence: BE FIERCE!

Rhino's don't retreat.  Rhino's CRASH.

Hebrews 12:1 tells us to "Throw off everything that hinders" (grumblers, criticism, grumpiness, bad attitudes).

The ESV says, "Lay aside EVERY WEIGHT."

Let go of it. 

Let go of the silly stuff.

The next verse in Hebrews says, "Look to JESUS."
Be fierce about HIM! 
He's in charge.  He's the Author.  He's the Perfecter.

And I love how chapter 12 wraps up:
"Therefore LET US BE GRATEFUL for receiving a kingdom THAT CANNOT BE SHAKEN, and thus let us offer to God acceptable WORSHIP, with reverence and awe,
for our God is a consuming fire."

Our God is FIERCE!  He's a FIRE! 
Let's reach the lost at any cost this weekend. 
Be FIERCE about it!

NBC's 3 Steps on How NOT to Lead

Talk about a Night Shift.

NBC's bungled canceling of The Jay Leno Show and shifting Conan O'Brien's Tonight Show is a virtual 3 step manual on how NOT to lead an organization:

Step 1)  Clarity in communication is paramount for leaders.  Jumbled statements only create the climate for chaos, which leads to fear-based speculation.  True leaders speak with courageous clarity and with one voice.

Step 2)  Never leave your teammates hanging.  If a talk needs to happen, it needs to be done quickly and privately (re-read that last word!).  Public disputes never further the mission.  Instead, the team needs to be 100% unified to build public trust and confidence.

Step 3)  Leaders take responsibility.  Sorry, but NBC head honcho Jeff Zucker needs to man up.  Pushing the blame onto your staff isn't damage control, its stupid.  Real men don't share the blame; they only share the wins!  When you mess up, humbly take responsibility.  Why?  Because that's what leaders do.

Choose a Bus

It's ok to have a different philosophy of ministry. 
Methods come and go.

Different flavors of churches reach different flavors of people.

The question is: Are you on the bus?
If not, do you need to find another bus you can get on? 
Because sitting outside and slashing bus tires is not an option.

Trust me, its more fruitful to have a seat on the bus.
Sitting with the rubber tires just makes you smelly.

Yes, your church is not perfect. 
No church is. 
Because you and I are part of it.

Choose instead to embrace Spurgeon's words written over 100 years ago:

For God's sake, let us know how men are to be saved, and get to the work; to be for ever deliberating as to the proper mode of making bread while a nation dies of famine, is detestable trifiling.

 

Raving Fans

Ken Blanchard's Leading at a Higher Level is stretching me at the moment.  Tremendous insights for reaching people far from God through the local church.  A couple items I've underlined:

Raving Fans: Guests who are so excited about how you treat them that they want to tell everyone about you. 

How do you create Raving Fans?  Routinely do the unexpected.

Leadership is about going somewhere.  If you and your people don't know where you are going, your leadership doesn't matter.
