Catalyst Cookout

Love it.
Even though I'm in Colorado and the weather (I hear) was rough in Ohio, our core folk went forward with a community-building cookout this past Sunday.
Love it.

Signage

That's been my buzz word for this week.

Dsc08307 Today I signed off on the new permanent signage that will grace the125 in the heart of downtown Kent.

Huge aluminum-based.  And some window graphics.  Via Advanced Display Systems.

Zoning permits are taken care of.  The city workers liked what they saw today.

While I'm in Colorado next week, professional painters will donate their time & expertise to soup up the ceilings & walls of our Phase One renovation.  Before we know it, the125 will be ground zero for all things Catalyst.  Exciting.

It feels like Chapter 2 of Catalyst is on the horizon.  A promising chapter where more lives are changed for time and eternity.

So thankful for Catalyst guys like Matt, Raul, & Chaz who have been busting it out the last few weeks on trim and ceiling work.

I can't wait to see the new signage unveiled at the Kent Heritage Festival in two weeks!  Fun times ahead...

Catalyst Roadtrip coming to Catalyst

Roadtrip08Just got off the phone with LV, part of the Catalyst Conference held annually in the great nation of Georgia.

(Side-note 1:  Yes, we totally ripped off their name when we planted back in 2006.  I think they're coming to get their copyright residuals check from us or something...)

Looks like the world-famous Catalyst Vanagon is tentatively coming to Catalyst in Kent on Sunday, July 13th

(Side-note 2:  These cool cats are driving around the country, recording their travels on a special blog.  The Vanagon is off-the-hook cool and it's been my goal in life to sit behind the wheel for a single moment in time.  Yes, bring your camera.)

Anyhow, come one, come all and hang out with the Catalyst Crew at Catalyst Church.  It will be a morning of great joy.  And fun to watch passersby scratch their heads at the Vanagon parked in front of The Kent Stage.

Summer Selah

Selah_series
"And the LORD answered me:
'Write the vision;
make it plain on tablets,
so he may run who reads it.
For still the vision awaits its appointed time;
it hastens to the end - it will not lie.
If it seems slow, wait for it;
it will surely come; it will not delay.'"

- Habakkuk 2.2-3 (ESV)

This June at Catalyst, we're pausing to catch our breath and recalibrate as a young church plant.  Known as a "Selah" in the Psalms and Habakkuk 3, we're stripping away everything on Sunday mornings to just Catalyst KIDS, unplugged teaching, and a whiteboard on The Kent Stage.

That's it.

We're pausing all outreach and doing 5 Sundays of inreach

Community-building.  Spirit-infusing.  Vision-recapturing.

Selah.  A chance for us to gel as a Core Team utilizing Acts 29 Network church planting training this summer and relaunching in the fall as a fresh new Catalyst.

I unpacked this more this past Sunday and have been blown away at people's responses.  This is definitely a God-directed move for all of us.

Our Core Team can download the notes every Wednesday night here, then print them out and bring them with on Sunday.  For everyone else in blog-land, your prayers and encouragement are appreciated!

One of the new features of our relaunched Catalyst site is the CataBlog.  For those interested in the inner-workings of our 20-month-old church plant, you may want to bookmark CataBlog.  It's the source for news & info for those who call Catalyst their home church...

Good News:
It's up!  Check it out here.

Bad News: It's 6.45am.  Jason Bonham just called - - he hit a deer going 70 mph on the way up here from Dayton.  He's totally ok, but his truck's undrivable and he's waaaay far away.  But you know what?  Praise God. It just means we're going to re:think WORSHIP today!

Exciting week around these parts...

Catalyst’s fresh new series that re:charts the course forward launches this Sunday at 10:30am.  It's shaping up to be a pivotal message series:

May 11: CHANGE
“Lord, I have heard of Your fame;
I stand in awe of Your deeds, O Lord.
Renew them in our day,
in our time make them known…” - Habakkuk 3.2

May 18: EVERYTHING
God doesn’t want anything from you.
He wants everything.

May 25: NOW
Guest Speaker: Jason Bonham

Check out the hot-off-the-press series video opener - I've been emailing out the link to friends throughout north-east Ohio who might be interested in what we're up to.

Jason Bonham in Daily Kent Stater

This seems to be the week for Catalyst making the news.

First, Yours Truly was interviewed in the May issue of Church Solutions Magazine.

Today the Daily Kent Stater runs in its popular A.L.L. weekly an interview with Catalyst's Jason Bonham

I love it - -
the movement of Jesus quietly creating culture...

CATALYST in Church Solutions Mag

Awhile back I mentioned being interviewed for Church Solutions Magazine about CATALYST's Web 2.0 ministry strategy.  The May issue is available now:

“I’m 30 years old, and my wife and I are the oldest couples there,” Herron says of his congregation, which is nestled in Portage County, a place where 85 percent of the people are unchurched. That’s why the Acts 29 network planted Catalyst in its collegiate habitat – a place where, if nothing else, a group of diverse students has a common interest: Facebook...

“Using Web 2.0 is so crucial to the 20- or 30-somethings’ popular culture,” Herron says. “The church has always contextualized the message to serve the culture, from pews to printed Bibles to organ music. The Internet is just the next step in doing that.”   ...more

FYI - Our new website will be debuting in a few short weeks - I can't wait!

Locked Out by a 1-Yr-Old

Dsc08059 Everyday my 1-yr-old amazes me.
And terrifies me.
Yesterday I had just brought the Little Man home with me.  He's running around the living room like a hamster discovering a wheel for the first time.  So I decide to take our pug out back for a quick tinkle.

I close the glass door behind me.  And then hear a click.  I whip-around to discover Josiah at the door, pleased with himself for having discovered how to lock Daddy out!  Terrifying.

Unless you're Josiah.  To him, adversity is an adventure.

Our church plant was birthed the same week in 2006 as Josiah.  Developmentally, we are just like Josiah - learning how to walk on our own, talk, but still making messes everywhere.

Here's what God has been revealing to me over the last few weeks:
In our zest to move from "church plant stage" to "church-hood," we've created systems that lock people out

Which is terrifying because it means that people far from God have hurdles to jump through on Sunday mornings.  This is counter to our vision.

Logo_sketches_sm So we're overhauling EVERYTHING in the coming weeks.  Holding up all our systems, approaches, ideas to the prism of our vision

If it matches, cool.  If not, we chuck it.  All of this is culminating in our new series beginning May 11th: re:think church

We want to re:turn to the movement of the early church.
Singularly focused on Jesus the Crucified.
Reaching people far from God.

Because when we honestly identify our self-made adversity, we can re:think and move forward into adventure.

Sunday

CATALYST was refreshing this morning.
Some thoughts...

- 2nd week in a row of baptisms - wow.

- Brianna's story was incredible.  Takes a lot of courage to share all she shared today!

- Umaraa's story of moving from Islam to Christ was equally moving.  Especially coming from a 16-yr-old!  She told me earlier in the week about how instead of praying 5 times to Mecca every day, now she prays to Jesus.  Incredible - the podcast is here.

- Yes, the entire beaver story is true

- Yes, I may blog about it with pix this week if there's enough demand.

- Diggin' the acoustic worship.  We've had a lot of Cleveland-area musicians express interest in joining the full house band - - I'm looking forward to the weeks ahead!

- Speaking of which, next week's message without exaggeration is going to be one of the most important messages ever given at CATALYST.  I am both excited and nervous.

- Final note - - this was written by a Guest visiting for the 2nd time on a Connection Card today:

"I loved this place!  It has pushed me over the edge to find the love I was looking for from the Lord.  I have been very intimidated... (wondering) where I belong until (I found) Catalyst!"

Wow.  That says it all.  That's why I get so pumped about Sundays!

To introduce Jason Bonham as our new Lead Worshiper, we showed this video from the audition process:

2008 Easter Egg Helicopter Drop

Last year we threw a party for the communities surrounding Kent.  Why?  Because Jesus hung out at parties more than at temples or church buildings.  Jesus always was about building relationships with people far from God.

So with just 10 days of word-of-mouth, over 600 people showed up.  Heading into 2008, we knew we'd need a location with prime parking and more field space if we were going to reach more people.

Today we officially locked in our date & location for CATALYST's 2nd Annual Easter Egg Helicopter hoopla.

Join us Saturday, March 15th at Ravenna Stadium for this free community-wide event!  The enthusiastic support we've received from the leadership of the Ravenna School District has God's fingerprints all over it.

Thousands of eggs.  One helicopter.  And a stadium.  Can't wait.

Here's highlights of last year's party:

BE a CATALYST

Beacatalyst
We are a young church plant in an extremely unreached area.

We have an ambitious, God-sized ministry strategy we are pulling the trigger on this March.

We have many supporters who believe in us.

We are looking for 100 partners to come alongside us.

Will you be a catalyst?

EXODUS 2.0

Exodusbanner1
After a break for our Christmas series and 2008 Vision-casting at CATALYST, this weekend we return to the great epic of EXODUS.  We'll be hitting the themes of redemption and bold faith found in Exodus 12.33 - 14.31.

Love this quote from Martin Luther King, Jr:

Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.

Facebook has more info on Sunday's Theology Lab at 9am and CATALYST at 10:30am

And yes, we'll be tackling the most famous miracle of Moses' journey.  If Google Earth had existed back then, satellites might have captured this picture:

Defining the Win

People new to CATALYST sometimes ask me, "How do you know if this church plant is making a difference?  What is the win?

My reply?

Seeing people receive Christ and be baptized
That's how we know God is in this.

The past 2 Sundays, we've seen lots of wins...

Introducing Jason Bonham

In my wildest dreams, I never would have imagined God bringing to CATALYST a new Lead Worshiper who is on the cusp of national prominence.

Ephesians 3.20, baby.

L_eddd498d5a1a4c4d33825bce90f3b071 After 8 months of searching, this morning at CATALYST, we announced that Jason Bonham will officially be joining the team on March 2nd (although don't be surprised if he pops in before then to say 'hey!').

Jason brings not only a professional skill-set honed from studying under guys like Ryan Wilkins, but also a transparent and humble heart that absolutely blows me away.

Ywj29prskb Take some time to become acquainted with Jason's music via MySpace and Virb... or grab his album off iTunes.

Please pray for Jason as he moves to Ohio from Massachusetts and pray for our band during this transition time...

Portable Baptisms

In its 80-year history, The Kent Stage has never been the site of public water baptisms.

This Sunday, we're making history.

2229901 As a portable church plant, we have to approach things differently.  For example, we had to figure out how to pull this off without a traditional church baptismal.  One trip to the local Tractor Supply Co and - whalla! - we'll be using a stock tank on a riser in front of the stage.

Seeking to reclaim the experience of the early Christ-followers 2,000 years ago, we are celebrating believer's baptism the way the early church did in Acts (and throughout the centuries): trine immersion.

With everyone from the Apostles to Augustine to John Wesley to Martin Luther historically practicing trine immersion, we are reclaiming the beauty and powerful witness of public baptism.  More info can be downloaded here.  Looking forward to CATALYST this Sunday!

Praxis

Wow - Justin Anderson and the fine folks at Praxis Church in Tempe, Arizona (part of the Acts 29 Network) have made a huge financial investment in expanding God's Kingdom through CATALYST

It absolutely blows me away when other church plants around the country, regardless of denomination, surprise us with much-needed, Gospel-motivated gifts

Very mission-minded.  Thank you, Praxis, for your generosity, encouragement, and prayers!

Lives Transformed

"And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness."
-  the early church in Acts 4.31 (ESV)

This is what I'm praying for at CATALYST during our "What If?" 2008 vision series.

Yesterday was off-the-charts-nuts (study notes available here).  I'm in awe of our mighty God on so many levels (I'll share stories this upcoming weekend).

One guy literally invited 987 Facebook friends to CATALYST (I nominate him for the "Billy Graham Wannabe of the Week Award!").  He desperately wants to see people far from God experience new life in Christ.

We saw young single twenty-somethings receive Christ and choose to get baptized next Sunday.  I just got an email from a new attender in his 50's who wants to go public with his faith through baptism as a believer.

One Core Team member put it this way in an unsolicited email this morning:

"I (am) very thankful that we were led to come to Catalyst.  Catalyst has been such a great experience for me all around and I actually enjoy going to church - I know, what a concept!"

Seeing lives transformed by the Gospel is
intoxicating
, eh?

END GOAL for the125:  Permanent CATALYST gathering space in the heart of Kent (literally) for Sunday morning children's environments, meeting/office space, college hang-out on Thursday nights, art show space for community events, etc:
Dsc05274 Dsc06786 Dsc07163

Dsc07739 Dsc07740 Dsc07738
UPDATE: Electricians are working feverishly this week and next.  Matt Powers, our contractor, is gutting the rear restroom and is framing walls.  It's an older building; we've discovered a few surprises that city inspectors are requiring us to update - - this will increase total costs. Prayers and online giving appreciated - - the sooner we finish Phase One, the sooner we can accommodate reaching more people far from God!

what if: VISION

Whatiflogo

From the first Christ-followers 2,000 years ago echoing into the 21st Century,
the Vision is Jesus
-
dangerously, obsessively, undeniably Jesus.

Jesus is the Vision.  The early church was focused like a laser on exalting this Carpenter-King.  Look at Peter's words:

"And there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4.12, ESV).

Jesus once said that if you lift Him up, He will draw all people to Himself.  That's what the early church was all about!

This vision was dangerous.  Every new follower of Christ was to be publicly baptized, a HUGE no-no for Jews.  Only Gentiles (unclean/outsiders) converting to Judaism were baptized.
This is dangerous stuff - you suffer humiliation & lose your reputation, family relationships, your work clientele...  all because of following Christ in baptism (CATALYST baptisms are Jan 20th - email for info!).

Obsessive is the right term to describe the type of fervent belief they had in the risen Christ.  Seriously, the first Jesus-followers just couldn't shut up about Jesus being God.  If you're a devout Jew, you worship God on the Sabbath, NOT Sunday mornings (the day Jesus rose from His casket).  You gotta be obsessed to break with thousands of years of solid Jewish law and tradition!

Undeniable?  You bet. Romans called the early church members atheists since their God had no statue.  Jewish leaders called the Christ-followers cannibals because they always celebrated communion by "eating the flesh and drinking the blood" of their Messiah.  It was undeniable to onlookers who the Christ-followers were.

Today this Vision still rings out.  What if what happened in first century Jerusalem happened in twenty-first century Akron and Kent?

what if: MANIFESTO

Thoughts after the first CATALYST of 2008:

- Special thanks to my friend Ken Wilson for setting the right mood with his video opener to the "What If?" messages.

- Really appreciate our hard-serving Core TeamThe sermon starts in the Lobby - vacuuming truly is a spiritual act of worship in God's house.

- For what it's worth, here's the podcast link and study notes for week one of "What If?"  It's pure, undiluted vision.

- I met a 1st time Guest who's a life-long resident of Kent after CATALYST in the Lobby.  He told me he has seen our fliers all over Kent and received mass mail postcards over the past year and decided to check things out.  He's absolutely PUMPED about our Vision for 2008, is coming to next weekend's Newcomers Luncheon and already wants to join our Core Team!  Wow - what a God thing!

- We handed out CATALYST's 2008 Vision Manifesto (and will continue to new friends and Guests joining us the next 2 Sundays).  Here's the pdf version for those cheering our church plant on via prayer and encouragement.

- A new church planter and his family from Akron came out to take notes on CATALYST - - looking forward to getting to know Jeremy later this week...

- I really appreciate Jacob and the Crew who lead us in worship week in and week out.  Dedicated guys.  Did they really pull off weaving "Where the Streets Have No Name" in the middle of "Did You Feel the Mountains Tremble"?

- CATALYST KIDS was humming.  I popped by before I spoke; we absolutely have to get Phase One of the renovations done asap - - there was no more space for visiting kids (a great problem to have, I suppose).  If you're interested in donating above and beyond toward the125project, you can give online here.

- Remember - Baptisms during CATALYST 2 weeks from today.  Already had our first person sign up.  It will be a first for The Kent Stage.

- I'm excited to spend these next few weeks in Acts and asking lots of questions for us to wrestle with as a community...  Then it's on to EXODUS!

The Kent Stage

Img_2111b CATALYST is fortunate to have a great relationship with the managers of The Kent Stage in the heart of downtown Kent.  As a portable church that sets up and tears down ministry environments every weekend, Tom and Rachelle go out of their way to not only accommodate our craziness, but also bless us with on-site storage for our equipmentKent City Manager Dave Ruller posts on his blog today the history of this venerable city landmark - - go leave him a comment...

What If?

Whatiflogo
Fasting from blogs and podcasts can be a healthy thing.  Most of my December was spent that way, spending less time cluttering my head and more time in the Scriptures and seeking to listen to God.

The result?  A fresh vision for CATALYST heading into 2008 revolving around Ephesians 3.20-21 and Acts 1-6.  It's all about asking ourselves the question, "What If?"

This Sunday we kick off 3 weeks of dreaming ahead - envisioning the kind of church Jesus is calling us to be.   I'm excited (like, night-before-Christmas-excited!) and hope you can join us.

After these next 3 weeks of solid vision-casting, we'll be ready to tear into the second leg of our Exodus journey on January 27th...

Help us get the word out - Facebook your pals...

GBNAM Closes Shop

Everyone who calls Catalyst home owes a big thanks to our friends at Grace Brethren North American Missions who have supported us financially and prayerfully.  GBNAM is closing shop - the official press release is now available here

Mission, Not Comfort

Continuing the Top 7 Things I Learned in '07:

2.  The Church Exists for Mission, Not Comfort

Catalyst launched in September 2006.
Entering 2008, we're getting past the "survival" phase and are now in a "stabilizing" phase.

It would be really easy for us to sit back, relax, and put Catalyst on cruise-control heading into the New Year.

But it's more fun (and biblical) to enter the fast lane.

The Westminster Shorter Catechism answers the question of what our purpose is:

"Man's chief end is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever."

You and I are created to worship Jesus of Nazareth.  Our DNA screams out for His throne room.  When we worship, we are doing what we're wired for: ascribing worth to that which is greater.

But here's the thing - -  we're not called to sit in the pew and get comfortable singing.

Dr. John Piper
puts it this way:

“The reason man was created in the beginning and the reason the church is being recreated in the end is for the worship of God...
Missions exists because worship doesn't. There will be no missions in the age to come. Worship will be our life. Missions is not our ultimate goal. It is a means to our goal.”

Our role right now is to be missionaries.  Jesus said in John 20.21:

"As the Father has sent Me, even so I am sending you."

We're on a mission - God's mission - to gather worshipers.  When we step into eternity, the mission is over.  In eternity we worship.  But in this short time we have before death, we are commissioned with reaching people who are far from God so that they will experience new life in Christ.

We are missionaries.  We cannot afford to be comfortable.

The moment we become comfortable and switch to cruise-control, we become a monument to the past.

The moment we embrace being uncomfortable and get on mission in the fast lane, we become a movement forging the future.

Heading into 2008, this is what my heart cries out for.  To be part of a movement, on a journey, on mission.  Together.  Worshiping God by being on mission.

Reminder: No CATALYST This Weekend

As a portable church plant that sets up and tears down every weekend at The Kent Stage and at our new, renovations-in-progress, 125 space, we rely on our volunteers big time.

So this year just like last, we are taking the final Sunday of 2007 off.  It's our gift to our volunteers.

Stay home, worship with your family, read Exodus together (the series returns in a few weeks!), or visit another church plant in the area (I recommend Momentum).

See you January 6th as we look ahead into 2008 with "What If?"

Authenticity = Congruency

Continuing the Top 7 Things I Learned in '07:

6.  Authenticity = Congruency.

Authenticity is the 1st of 3 core values we have at Catalyst.

The need for spelling this out as a value came from the perceived lack of transparent leadership in North American church circles (note: perceived; unfortunately our frail humanity is quickly lost in postmodern deconstructionism).

Living authentically as a Christ-follower is simply about congruency in community.  The truth you proclaim is lived out relationally.

The opposite of authenticity is hypocrisy.  This is a common critique of those who feel dechurched.

Authentic living (and leading) is integral to discipleship in the 21st century.  Christian apologetics is becoming less about verbalizing intellectual truth and more about relational living in light of eternal truths.

You say you believe in something?
How has it affected the way you relate to others?

You say you're about radical forgiveness
How has that played out in your family and friends' lives?

If there is incongruence between the two, there is inauthentic living (and leading).  If there is authenticity behind your faith, there is integrity guarding your heart.

Large Amygdalas

Men have larger amygdalas than women.

The amygdala is a tiny part of the base of the brain that keeps strong memories of extremely scary moments in your life.

Men's amygdalas are larger, meaning most men have a strong sense of "fight or flight."

When it comes to churches, most men have a "flight" response.  At Catalyst, we intentionally and unapologetically flavor our worship experiences with a strong masculine overtone.  We want to see men receive Christ and "fight" for expanding the Kingdom.

Case in point - I just got this unsolicited email from a mother at Catalyst that reminds me why we do what we do:

I just wanted to write and thank you for the work that you do at Catalyst.  My family has loved coming to the church for the last six months...
I will be forever grateful for the role Catalyst played in getting my husband back in church.

This is why we spend so much time, prayer, and effort setting up and tearing down each week at The Kent Stage.  We aim for creative excellence and an authentic atmosphere so that people far from God will experience new life in Christ!
