Redemption in Merging a Church Plant

Photo
While traveling during my blogging hiatus,
I caught up with my good friend, Josh Allen.  In the midst of catching up on our lives, God smacked me with a profound truth.

First, some background: Josh was on-staff as the worship leader at our Ohio church plant.  I jokingly say that Josh and I went through war together:
front page news one month,
merging with another area church
due to the Great Recession the next.

God was faithful as Josh and I shepherded our young congregation toward Western Reserve Grace Church.  Josh now serves as their Worship Pastor and was sharing stories with me of how former Catalyst folk are thriving in their relationships with Christ and continuing to pour themselves out for the Kingdom of God in north-east Ohio.

Leaving Catalyst was deeply painful - our family had sacrificed everything in church planting.  While the moment was fresh, I felt like a nuclear blast had gone off in my soul.

The first person to call me when Catalyst closed its doors was Perry Noble.
I'll never forget his life-giving words to me: "Jonathan, you are not a failure.
God needed to do this in your life for a greater purpose."

Although I could not have known it at the time, God was preparing a resurrection.

In John 12, Jesus said to His followers, "Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit."  The death of one dream was the genesis for the birth of countless others.

And for our family, that greater purpose was eventually serving in Michigan.  But as time went by and is often the case, I lost track of some of our old friends and supporters in Ohio.  I always wondered how things turned out for them.

Photo3 And here is where God used Josh to smack me: Josh said that the final six months serving in our church plant were redemptive in his life.  Where I felt bleakness, Josh experienced new life.

You see, up until then, Josh had only experienced rejection from the senior leadership whenever he transitioned out of a church.  For the first time in his ministry career, Josh told me that Catalyst allowed him to transition out of working at a church while maintaining a deep friendship with the lead pastor.

Serving now at Western Reserve, Josh shared story after story of former Catalyst folk who are absolutely, God-glorifyingly thriving.  Guys like Matt Simon, who interned at Catalyst, now graduating with his Master's degree and coming on staff at Western Reserve.

You see, God allows things to die because He's in the resurrection business.
God scoops up broken people like you and me because He's in the redemption business.

My encouragement to leaders today is this:
If your ministry or church plant is limping along,
and you're feeling like your tank is on empty, take a step back.
God is still sovereign.  The King is still on the throne.
Sometimes our faces are so close to the pixels that only with time and distance can we see the full picture.

Seattle | Day Three

IMG_1349
I am typing this blog post from the airport terminal during a 3 hour layover in Las Vegas.
Yes, I happen to be in Vegas.
But I'm not staying in Vegas.

My final day in Seattle was packed with meetings.

First up was time spent touring Brooklake Church with Scott Harris, lead pastor.  I've been following Scott's journey out of church planting and into an established, thriving church with personal interest.

Appreciated Scott's insights on church planters who, for whatever reason, end up transitioning out of planting.  He rightly termed the experience the "Death of the Dream."  As we shared our stories, we couldn't help but ask aloud who in the blogosphere is honestly and rawly talking about this aspect of church planting?  The closest name we could lock-in on was Ben Arment.

IMG_1343 Which ended up with me calling Ben later in the day... while standing in front of Mars Hill Church (the moment was a bit surreal).

As always, Ben was encouraging.  He's an encouraging friend.  I encourage you to follow Ben.

Upon entering the Mars Hill Offices, I promptly toured the Mars Hill restrooms.  They were recently reformed.  (Thank you.  Thank you very much.  I'm performing in Vegas right now.  Literally.)

Truly appreciated spending a few hours with Scott Thomas, executive elder at Mars Hill and director of the Acts 29 Network.  We grabbed Thai food, which is a little like eating soup consisting of Degobah.

Scott also wins the award for coolest office desk.  I'm not sure if I'm allowed to share anything about Scott's desk beyond that, except to say that I want one (I'm looking at you, Santa Claus!).

On a serious note, the time was also a bit surreal as Scott was just receiving the news about Matt Chandler as we met.  Heartbreaking news that reminds us of the difference between hope and desire.

Scott graciously shared wisdom and insights that will help me in leading Colwood Church heading toward the new year.  Two tidbits of wisdom that I don't think Scott would mind me sharing:

"Most church leaders lead out of comfort, not courage."

"Speculation is explosive!
Raw truth is more healing."

Now I'm in Vegas.  My mind is oatmeal.
My heart is excited to see my family.
Thanks for tuning into my Seattle adventures.
Seacrest out.

Momentum 2009

IMG_0619 The team behind Momentum Youth Conference 2009 is knocking it out of the park!  The venue at Pittsburgh's Robert Morris University is great and FEE is, well, FEE (more on my Twitter).

Loved sharing from the mainstage this morning and breakouts continuing into tomorrow.  Amber & I got to spend time over lunch with some potential Pennsylvania church planters - just encouraging them to pursue God's call without apology, get some Acts 29 training, and hang on for the ride of their life!

For what its worth, here is the description of my breakout sessions from the Momentum conference booklet:

In a free-ranging conversational style, students will get a Google Earth-view of the New Testament.  From the historical reality of Jesus of Nazareth to the passionate explosive-growth of the early church movement, students will be engaged by how the Gospel intersects with their 21st Century technology-driven lives.  More info at JonathanHerron.com.

I spent some time tonight talking with Scott Thomas, Director of the Acts 29 Network.  I was reminded again of how God is using Scott in mighty ways to lead, shepherd, and encourage the work of planting and re-planting churches internationally for Christ's glory and the Kingdom's advancement.

If you get a moment, read Scott's A29 blog.  I especially loved this quote he shared in a recent post:

"Complainers spit in the face of God because they are always expecting more from God, as if they earned special privileges from God."

I especially enjoyed snapping these pix of my little nephew, Cameron.
Once he gets his crawling-engine revved up, he keeps going, and going, and...

catalyst | palm sunday

I've always enjoyed Palm Sunday.  Nothing compares with seeing the looks on kids' faces as they wave their palm branches at church.  For fun, I looked at the pix of Josiah with his palm branch last year (2008):

Compare this with today's pic of Josiah (2009).  Yes, he is eating his palm branch during Catalyst tear-down:

This morning was a great start to focusing on Easter.  Despite a weekend ER trip that resulted in a hole in his right thumb (don't ask), Josh Allen led the band in nailing Lee McDerment's We Stand.  Seriously, nailed it.

For your enjoyment, here's some random pix from set-up and tear-down this morning:

Front Page News

DSC08679 I got Josh Allen's voicemail around noon on Saturday:

"Um, Hey Jon, it's Josh.  I just heard that Catalyst is the front page story in today's Akron Beacon-Journal.  Big color picture and everything!  Did you know we were going to be front page?"

Nope.

Only God.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this.
Above-the-fold news coverage in the major daily.

And then this in the local Stow newspaper on Sunday.

Our God is able to do far more abundantly than we could ever ask for or imagine.  Amazing.

Catalyst Offices

Lots happening at the Catalyst Offices this week.  Tons of emails, phone calls, connections being made.  I took a break and snapped these pix of the band trying out the new drum set:

I think Matt is getting overwhelmed by all the phone calls.  But he was happy when he spotted our Facebook presence online:

Closing Time

IMG_0180
"So gather up your jackets, and move it to the exits
I hope you have found a friend.
Closing time,
every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end.
"

The band this morning played us out to part of the song Closing Time.  God has been exceedingly gracious to our church start-up during this season at The Kent Stage.  Today we worshiped there one last time - so many memories.

Catalyst has gone from our living room to a traditional church building to the Stage... and now we look ahead to Regal Cinemas - a new season of ministry and opportunity awaits!
