Heading into the 08-09 ministry season at Catalyst, some of our leaders met recently to cover our foundations of leadership. For what it's worth, here's what I shared:
1) Loyalty is Paramount (or "Bros before Woes")
- Trust is foundation for everything
(5 Dysfunctions of a Team).
- Be fiercely loyal to Jesus' vision for Catalyst,
our church plant, our staff.
- Disloyalty = turf wars, division.
Grounds for dismissal.
- We're not in jr high. Have an issue?
Go directly to the source and deal with it
immediately.
- Your identity is not in your job title; it's in Christ.
Therefore changes down the road should = no prob.
- If we should ever part ways, go in peace.
Not in a blaze of glory.
2) Replace Yourself (or "If you get hit by a bus,
who will make coffee?")
- Trained leaders train leaders.
- Replicate the vision.
- You are not the Messiah.
Being the Messiah gets you killed.
3) Ministry may Outgrow You
- If the size exceeds your leadership capacity,
it's ok to pass the baton.
- As Catalyst grows, your role & responsibilities
will expand.
- It's alright to step away for a season.
You've already replicated yourself, right?
4) Make New Mistakes
- Leaders take faith-sized risks.
- We will make mistakes.
If we're not failing, we're coasting.
- Learn from mistakes.
Repetitive mistakes = leadership problem.
- New mistakes = Cause for celebration!

excellent post
