Catalyst is going through the book of Mark right now. Jonathan is encouraging all of us to read the passages at home during the week and use the study guide for further information. I was reading through the passages of this week (Mark 3:7-6:6) and found a really intriguing little section...
Mark 5
Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon
1(A) They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes.[a] 2And when Jesus[b] had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. 3(B) He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, 4for
he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the
chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the
strength to subdue him. 5Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. 6And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and(C) fell down before him. 7And(D) crying out with a loud voice, he said, "What have you to do with me, Jesus,(E) Son of(F) the Most High God?(G) I adjure you by God, do not torment me." 8For he was saying to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!"
9And Jesus asked him, "What is your name?"
He replied, "My name is(H) Legion, for we are many." 10And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. 11Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, 12and they begged him, saying, "Send us to the pigs; let us enter them." 13So
he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out, and entered
the pigs, and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the
steep bank into the sea and were drowned in the sea.
14The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. 15And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed[c] man, the one who had had(I) the legion, sitting there,(J) clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 16And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. 17And(K) they began to beg Jesus[d] to depart from their region.
I would be totally freaked out if right outside my town was a crazy, naked, self-mutilating person like the demon possessed man described in this passage! He was basically trying to stone himself or something - NOT NORMAL! Jesus comes along and heals the man. How will the people respond? Do they thank Jesus over and over again because now they feel that it is safe again for their children to run and play? Are they in awe of Jesus' power and insight? Nope. They see the man calm and clothed and they are AFRAID???? My thought is, "what the heck?" The guy used to be a total scary weirdo and now he is normal and him being normal scares you? They go one step further and they ask Jesus to leave their town!
I am sure there are some deeper historical meanings here. In fact, I think I remember studying this and discovering that the demon guy was a big source for their economy, but I want to look past that. I think that the people of this town might have gotten so comfortable with the sin around them and the sin within them that when that sin was restored through Jesus, they were afraid. The process of sin being restored and repentance requires great sacrifice and change. It is not an easy process. And change usually involves pain.
It's easy to read these types of passages and think, "I would never be so stupid or blind after having a personal encounter with Jesus like that." I would argue, however, that we do it everyday. Jonathan mentioned a few weeks ago how our culture doesn't encounter demon possession because Satan has a hold of us in other ways (materialism, self-sufficiency, pride - to name a few). Our entire society and often we ourselves are entrenched in sin. How do we respond when we experience a strong conviction from Jesus? Are we afraid?
Let me make this more personal....Jonathan and I are in the process of totally overhauling our personal finances. The end result of this process will honor God and enable us to give more freely. The process itself, however requires sacrifice and change. Honestly, this is a bit scary! We are in the process of giving up some extra comforts and privlidges (that our society claims we are entitled to). You see, like the people of the Gerasenes, I have grown comfortable in some sin in my life and giving that up leads to some fear (if I am honest).
Another example of this principle that I see around me all the time is in relationships. I have seen many Christians entrenched in a relationship that is not God-honoring. They just can't seem to give it up, though. Why? They are afraid of the changes it will mean in their life (and change can really hurt sometimes!).
Let's look at how the demon man responded to Jesus....
8As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. 19And he did not permit him but said to him, "Go home to your friends and(A) tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you."
20And he went away and began to proclaim in(B) the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.
He BEGS to stay with Jesus! He has personally experienced the restoration that Jesus offers and he doesn't want to let it go. He never wants to forget! Jesus redirects him to share this story and experience with others. The man does this and the attitude of the people becomes awe! When we allow Jesus to restore us from sin areas in our life, our fear is turned to fear (awe)!
Lord - forgive me for fearing letting go of sin in my life more than the awe I have for you. Help me to abandon all else to be restored by You. Amen.
