And those twelve
stones, which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up at Gilgal. And he said to the people of Israel, “When
your children ask their fathers in times to come, ‘What do these stones mean?’
then you shall let your children know, ‘Israel passed over this Jordan on dry
ground.’ For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until
you passed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up for
us until we passed over, so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the
hand of the Lord is mighty, that you may
fear the Lord your God forever.
Joshua 4:20-24
Scripture shows many examples of God’s desire for His followers to pause and remember His faithfulness and provision. This is one way our faith can be handed down from generation to generation – living memorials. I love this image in Scripture of the Israelites crossing over the Jordan (miraculously) and entering the promised land. The first thing they do is stop, worship and remember. Notice that they do not just thank God for getting them across the Jordan? They look back over the last 40 years in the desert to when God first rescued them! They go back to the Red Sea. God is all about remembering! Why else would He choose to lead His people into the promised land by the exact same method that He first rescued them from slavery (parting of waters)? God was prompting His people to think about the last time He parted waters for them. It’s as if He is saying, “I told you I would rescue you way back when you fled Egypt – I am always faithful.” He is also making sure that the Israelites remember that they did not make this journey out of their own strength. I just love this story – it excites me!
I have felt that it is important to create my own altar of twelve stones to mark God’s faithfulness in the Herron journey over the last 5-6 months. I would argue that a blog can be a kind of living memorial. The content will be out there forever for future generations to read. I want my children (and so on) to be able to see God’s exceeding faithfulness to our family!
*stay tuned for part 2
I can't wait for Part 2
