One hobby that I am SOOOOOO thankful that Jonathan and I share is being book-lovers! I have always loved reading. I remember reading books alongside my grandma with her nightly apple as a little girl. I also remember growing a little older and being so engrossed in a book that my parents would catch me reading by my nightlight instead of going to bed! Well, it seems that our little guy is catching this hobby for himself (making us extremely proud!).
I took Josiah to the library up here for the first time last week. The librarian was VERY nice and she remarked at least three times about how much Josiah loves handling and looking at the books. I don't really think much of it and assumed all kids are like that.
One change that I am trying out in Josiah's room here is to have a small bookshelf with some books on it. Before we had to keep them monitored due to ripping, etc. We still have some issues with that, but overall, he is doing great. Josiah loves spending time in his room reading.
Over the last week, Jon and I have gone to check on him at night to find him READING BY HIS NIGHTLIGHT! LOL. We both have a strange pride in the fact that our child is not going to sleep, but instead is engrossed in his pictures and letters. So, we have a new rule - you can read books at bed time and nap time as long as you stay in bed.
We let this slide because we believe that "readers are lifelong learners" and "readers are leaders" - two things we don't want to squelch in our growing boy!
How wonderful that he loves to read. I to used to read at night after going to bed but by the bathroom light. Its a wonder I am not crosseyed. I even used a flashlight sometimes. Books can take you anywhere and let you be anything. I will send books for Christmas.

Oh, the ripping pages out phase! Both kids went through that. Didn't last long. Only a few tears were shed (theirs AND mine....books are treasures to me :).
And both still go to bed with a flashlight and books. Sure, it delays sleep time by 15-20 minutes, but it's some of the most valuable time they spend all day, I think! :)
Loved this post. :)

It's wonderful that Josiah enjoys books so much -- taking them to the library at a young age really encourages them to read for themselves -- Jon was hooked on books from an early age also. :-)
